ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kelda Martensen is a visual artist, mother, and educator known for her innovative works on paper. Her tactile and layered prints are created through woodblock, letterpress, screenprint, and monotype printing processes, which she then collages into final compositions. With a poetic approach to abstraction, Martensen’s work references geological forms, figurative gestures, plant life, and climate. Narratives and dialogues emerge between her shapes, alluding to a pre-language way of storytelling.

Raised in Gig Harbor, Martensen grew up influenced by the wooden boat building community, her father’s woodshop, and her mother’s music. Her family culture taught her to prioritize hands-on, DIY solutions, being outdoors, and respecting the land. With her generations-deep devotion to craftsmanship, she approaches printmaking and collage with a soulful connection to her materials, and her work keeps process and the artist’s hand in plain sight. Martensen teaches at North Seattle College, where you can find her in the printmaking and book arts studios, or out painting murals with her students.
